Josh @ Safeguard

“Although we’ve got a great team, many of whom have worked with us for years, we really needed new blood, and it’s difficult to find someone who works the way we do. We decided it was time to take on an apprentice, someone who we could train to our own standards and who would be learning the latest techniques and technologies.

“East Ayrshire Council’s Economic Development Team has been a huge help.  We approached them about taking on an apprentice and together with Skills Development Scotland they’ve given us a whole raft of support. We’ve really benefited from their training courses and seminars which help us evaluate our business, network and look at ways of improving our systems. They’ve also helped us work our way through complex procurement procedures, bidding systems and given us confidence to go after new business. Accreditation and meeting standards are vitally important in establishing  and maintaining credibility in this business and the Business Support team have been instrumental in funding and guiding us through the processes necessary to gain the National Security  Inspectorate Gold Award.  And of course we now also have Josh!”

Josh Hollywood from Kilmarnock studied at St Joseph’s Academy, Kilmarnock,  and studied a Pre-Apprenticeship Course  at Kilmarnock College. “I’d always been interested in Engineering, and when I finished my course at Kilmarnock College I went to East Ayshire’s Employability Team. For 5 weeks I attended a sessions where we were given help with job applications, interview skills and it really built my confidence. Then they asked if I’d be interested in working with Safeguard and I jumped at the chance. I love it. No two days are the same. There are 12 employees here of all ages and it’s great working with them and learning and I’m enjoying college too. No two days are the same and I’d really encourage anyone thinking about doing a Modern Apprenticeship to go for it.”
